Medical Transcription Hiring: Finding and Keeping Your First MT Job

Jobs are not necessarily the easiest to find, much less keep. People who are interested in transcriptionist work have to start somewhere. The most successful transcriptionists were once unemployed, and with that being said, anyone can make it big. If you look hard enough, you can find transcriptionist hiring ads all over the internet.

Although there are ads for transcription positions plastered in just about every magazine and on every work-at-home website around, it doesn’t mean that they are easy to obtain. If your wishes are to wiggle your way into the transcriptionist work field, you must first learn about the subject. You must learn medical terminology along with several other related subjects before knowing what you are doing. One thing a lot of transcriptionist hiring ads do not state until you contact them is that they are looking for experienced employees.

Experience usually means at least two years of on-the-job transcriptionist work and/or a certificate proving that you completed an accredited transcription program. It’s not impossible to get a job in transcription, but it does take some time. There is always the option of working for free, but who wants to do that?

Try not to get too far ahead of yourself when stepping into transcriptionist work. Instead, focus on getting your education and then worry about responding to the transcriptionist hiring ads. Put your all into your studies that way you will have something to show for it. Applying yourself to learning is the best way to complete your training program with flying colors. Set aside a couple of hours each day when you can completely devote yourself. Creating a schedule will help out a lot when applying for your first transcriptionist work position.

You’re going to have to get used to sitting at your computer and focusing on medical transcription if you are to ever try to obtain a job. After you complete your training, create a professional resume to send in to a few of the transcription companies that are hiring. Wait on a response before sending in too many resumes. Most of the time, people usually only have to send in no more than 5-7 resumes. The key is to be professional. You don’t want to have your resume floating all over the place. Apply to only the companies you are most interested in at first.

Once you are hired, take some additional time out of your day to polish up on your skills by reading as much as you can about medical terms. Listen to the reports that are the most difficult over and over again until you get the hang of it. Practice typing to increase your speed in your spare time. Doing all of these things will make you a better transcriptionist and help you to remain a valuable employee.

Another way to keep your job is to do your work. Just because you work from home does not mean that you don’t have to work at all. You do have to work, just on your own time, which should be at least a couple of hours per day. Make sure that you do not take on anymore work than you can handle. As your skills improve, you will become faster and be able to complete more reports in less time. Beginners shouldn’t apply for anymore than part-time transcriptionist work because those first couple of months are all about learning and practice.

So remember, don’t rush anything, and don’t apply to transcriptionist hiring ads unless you’re absolutely positive you are ready for the commitment. Above all else, do your best to maintain a good attitude toward your work. If you can do these things, you can find and keep your first job, as well as continue to grow in a professional manner.

Medical Transcriptionist Education: The Path to Your Success

We all want to be successful in life. Probably the last thing you thought about when you were younger was becoming successful starting your own business online or even working from home at all for that matter. Transcriptionist work is something that plenty of people are doing from home and enjoying. Anyone can become a medical transcriptionist and get away from the torture of working for someone else.

Right now, you’re most likely doing something you do not want to do, which is what has lead you to searching for work online. You’ve also probably been working at a dead end job for quite some time now. Dead end jobs do not allow for advancement. People tend to start a dead end job, and quickly bounce around to the next hoping that maybe one day they will finally be happy and relieved from all of their financial worries. Dead end jobs do not usually require any type of experience, so they’re basically just “easy come, easy go” positions.

Without an education, people don’t go that far in life, unless they get extremely lucky. Transcriptionist work is not a dead end job, it’s a career that is best performed with an education. But like most people, you probably do not have time for a transcriptionist education. If you think about it, most people waste a great deal of their lives bouncing around from job to job when they could be studying for a career that will save them from their apparent situation.

It’s best to go into transcriptionist work if you want to work from home. Your skills as a trained transcriptionist can take you very far in life. There will be no more worries about tomorrow, nor will there be any concerns about whether or not you will have money to pay the rent or house payment. Medical transcriptionists make very good money, which is something that not a lot of people know about.

Transcriptionist work is not like medical billing or medical coding, although there has been a lot of comparison made by several websites, articles, etc., most of it is just opinion. Medical billing and coding do not offer the financial freedom that transcription does. Medical transcription is not a career that pays a mere $12.00 or $13.00 per hour. If you receive a transcriptionist education, the possibility of making $30.00 per hour within your first five years is very likely.

The best education facilities for transcriptionist work are found online. First and foremost, your online training facility of choice must be accredited. If not, then consider it more time wasted. The online companies that hire transcriptionists pay very close attention to whether or not the applicant has any previous experience. Most applications that do not display any transcriptionist education or experience are tossed.

There are a lot of different types of transcriptionist education facilities online. Some types are self-paced, and others are scheduled. There are those that also help with job placement, and then there are some that do not. Since it can be difficult to obtain employment as a newbie, it is suggested that everyone who is just starting out do their best to receive help. Ask if your training facility helps with job placement before signing up.

It pays off in the end to receive an education in any field of employment. These days, it’s all about skills. Even if you already possess those skills, employers still need to see the proof. As stressful and tedious as it may seem, it’s only a small portion of your life. When it’s over, success will come easily and your problems will be gone.

Medical Transcriptionist College: Is it REALLY Necessary?

There is a lot of controversy about whether or not college is really necessary in order to obtain transcription jobs. Some people say yes and some say absolutely not. There is some truth to both opinions. The route that you choose to take is completely up to you.

Since everything related to the economy has been headed down south for quite some time now, people are becoming more interested in exploring work-at-home alternatives. At first, the idea seems impossible because of the strong association with scams and work-at-home jobs. Fortunately, there are transcription jobs which have provided the work-at-home industry with a completely new and improved reputation.

Ordinarily, people can usually just start their jobs online with no experience. Depending on what you want out of your career, you may not have to go to transcriptionist college. The upside is that you can begin work right away, and start making money. The only question is, how much money can you make? That is where the downside comes in. The money you make as someone who doesn’t know the first thing about transcription is very little, probably between $2.00 and $6.00 per hour. It’s the truth, there are people who actually settle for that and decide to stick with it. Sound bad? Definitely.

To top the poor pay comes the trouble with finding a job that will hire without experience. Most of the time, people have to offer their services for free until the company decides to hire them, if they ever do. The skills that are taught in transcriptionist college are very important to have when looking for transcription jobs.

The upside of getting an education includes an easier time finding a higher-paying position. The starting pay for someone who is fresh out of transcriptionist college is about .08 cents per line, and hourly pay usually starts at about $9.00 per hour. As you can see, there is a very big difference. You’re not going to get as frustrated trying to make out what the dictator is saying, thus wasting less time researching the terms. The downside is that you have to wait until you get your certificate before making that kind of money, which can take up to two years. But in the meantime, you may want to try offering your services for free or for a lower-paying wage if you really want to get to work right now.

If it is your decision to get enrolled into a transcription school, again, there are plenty of options. The internet carries a lot of information on transcriptionist colleges, which can be found by using Google or another popular internet search engine. Accreditation is important, so don’t forget to check that out as well. You’ll have a larger variety of transcription jobs to choose from when you receive training, and you won’t have to look that hard to find work.

So, is training necessary? For higher pay and more opportunities, yes. If you want to work from home and just make some money, then no it’s not. Determine what your goals are before making a decision, and also consider your current situation. A quality education is recommended, but not required.

Medical Transcriptionist Average Salary: What You Need to Know

A lot of people want to know what the average salary for a medical transcriptionist is. It’s no surprise that there are so many questions about this particular profession. If you take a moment to surf the web and look at subjects related to transcriptionist work, you’re going to find that everyone has a different opinion.

Where you go in this career is up to you. Some people have chosen to work for a doctor’s office at the actual medical facility and be provided hourly pay. That is what is comfortable for them, but it is not the only option. Transcriptionist work is different type of career because it allows you to make your own decisions about pay.

Not everyone makes an average salary, as a matter of fact, there really is no such thing as an average salary for transcriptionists. If you want to get technical, the estimated salary of someone in this profession is around 40K per year, but that is just an estimate. There are people who are only making $5,000 to $15,000 per year. Some of them do not have the time to invest and some are only looking for chump change.

On a more positive note, there are people in transcriptionist work who are also making as much as $100,000 per year, although they are very devoted to their work. The truth about it is that if you spend more time working, you’ll be compensated for your efforts. If you do not spend as much time working, you won’t get paid for it.

As far as pay rates are concerned, there are plenty of variations. As you continue to read about transcriptionist work, you are going to find that there are people who are making $14.00 per hour, .06 cents per line and everything in between. Unless you choose to accept an hourly position, you will be paid by the line. Although there are, however, some instances where transcriptionists are paid by the page, but most people choose to accept their payment on a per-line basis.

And that is where average salary gets thrown out the window. Some of the most productive transcriptionists will experience slow days, so there really is no room for average salary. What you can do is set yourself a weekly or daily goal. Let’s say that you plan to type at least 1200 lines per day at .10 cents per line. Choosing to do so will earn you $120.00 dollars per day. If you’re typing five days per week, you’re going to make $600.00 per week.

Let’s also say that five years down the road you are now getting paid .12 cents per line and are now typing 1700 lines per day, five days per week. That’s $204.00 per day and $1020.00 per week. Now let’s take it a couple of more years down the road and assume that you have gained experience, a lot more speed, and are now working out on your own, charging your own transcriptionist work rates. Your probability for an even heftier paycheck is much higher.

When charging your own rates, it is important that you find out what the going rates are for transcriptionists in your area. If you’re charging too much, you won’t be able to obtain any clients. Let’s assume that .16 cents per line is the going rate in your area for transcriptionist who have at least seven to ten years of experience. If you’re typing 2500 lines per day, working full-time, and charging .16 cents per line, you’re going to make a whopping $400.00 per day and $2000.00 per week. Of course, you’ll have to put some money back for taxes, but still, that is a lot of money to be working from home!

All you really have to do is realize your goals and apply yourself to them. Anyone can make big bucks from home, it’s just more of a possibility in transcriptionist work.

Medical Transcription Work From Home is an Amazing Opportunity

As you search the internet for work-at-home ideas and positions, think about what you really want to do. Do you want to make a couple of dollars on the side, or are you more interested in a part-time job? The internet carries a lot of opportunities for at-home employment. Perhaps you’re more interested in a career such as transcriptionist work that offers health benefits along with the potential to make an above-average yearly salary.

Most people in the United States who do not have job skills make around $200.00 to $400.00 per week. Sadly, those amounts are barely enough to pay the essential bills, much less pay for anything extra you may need. People who are wanting to break free from working for others are presented with a huge opportunity to work from home and make big bucks in home transcription.

You may be wondering why transcriptionist work is so wonderful. What is it that sets it aside from other home jobs? Quite like sales positions and affiliate programs, there are no limits when it comes to making money. The only difference is that you are not badgering people to purchase your products. There is no searching involved, just sitting and typing at your computer in your quiet, peaceful home.

Home transcription companies provide online training programs to help you better your skills. There is no need for concern about how poor of a job you are going to do. People do not have to question whether or not they are going to succeed or make enough money. Once you’re employed, that’s it, you’re set for life.

As your experience increases, so do your skills and paycheck. Transcription companies allow for mistakes from newbies because they know it’s going to happen, so it’s okay. There is a lot of support for this type of career in the healthcare industry. Medical transcriptionists are an actual part of the healthcare industry that help to contribute their skills just like doctors, office personnel, and nurses. All operations in the medical office run much smoother because of medical transcriptionists.

Aside from being a great career, home transcription lets you stay home with your family. There is no need for a strict daily schedule, just make sure that your work is done each day and you should be fine. Parents are spending hundreds of dollars per week on daycare, which defeats the purpose of working to earn a living. Now it’s more like parents are working to stay away from their children, pay for daycare, and remain slaves to their bosses. Transcriptionist work isn’t stressful, although there are still deadlines to meet. You are still going to have a strong sense of obligation to your work because it is how you are going to make money, but face it, it could be much worse. At least you’re not going to feel pressed for time as badly as before. You can begin work anytime of day that fits into your schedule the best.

Home transcription is exciting in every aspect. Instead of dreading your work, you’ll look forward to it because you can set higher goals for yourself. Transcriptionist work does not stick you with an hourly wage. Pay is based on experience, skill, and production. Within five years, most people are making around 50K per year, given they work full-time.

It sounds like a dream right now, however the control is in your hands. To break it down, all you have to do is learn how to type fast, understand medical terminology, and dictation. All of these things are taught by training programs which can be conveniently located online. After about four months to a year (depending on how quickly you study), you too can be an employed or independent medical transcriptionist.

Medical Transcriptionist Wages: How to Earn Top Dollar For All Your Work

You’re likely to hear that transcriptionist work pays a lot of money, and then again you’re likely to hear that it does not. It all depends on who you talk to and how much of their time and dedication they have invested into their career.

The more you know, the more you can make. Breaking it down couldn’t be any simpler than that. If you want to earn high transcriptionist wages, first seek out an education. A certification can help you to earn twice as much money per line, hour, or page. It only takes about a year or so to achieve your certification, and sometimes much less time than that. You can find transcriptionist work programs that will provide your certificate in as little as 4 months if you search hard enough.

Don’t look just anywhere though, because there are programs out there that are not accredited. As difficult as it may be to believe, many transcriptionist work companies won’t hire you unless you achieve an accredited certification or diploma. That is just how serious this profession is. There is simply too much information at stake to risk hiring someone who didn’t receive a good quality education. A patient’s health information is a big deal.

Finding high-paying transcriptionist work positions isn’t impossible for beginners when they have an education. Within a year, you’re almost guaranteed to be getting paid .10 cents per line. However, if you’re really wanting to be paid what you’re worth, it’s recommended to charge your own rates. Do some research to find out what the current rates in your area are so that you do not make the mistake of overcharging for your services. There is a good chance that you are worth .21 cents per line, but if most other transcriptionists are charging around .14 cents per line in your area, your client may resist hiring you.

Always start off charging the going transcriptionist wages, and with time, increase by a cent or two every couple of years. Eventually, you can make what you are really worth. Proving your skills to your client or company is one of the best ways to achieve recognition. Although, it’s impossible to increase skill without a couple of useful transcription tools.

Medical transcription is all about productivity and accuracy. If you can produce an accurate medical report, then that’s wonderful. However, if you’re typing an accurate report slowly, it won’t benefit the client or company. Typing an accurate medical report quickly is what benefits everyone involved. Your chances of higher pay improve once you setup a quiet work space. You have to concentrate and focus on your work. Word expander software can make it easier to type faster because you don’t have to type out the entire word. A good set of headphones can make hearing the dictation simple, and a foot pedal can save you lots of time from having to remove your hand from the keyboard.

Once you increase in productivity and accuracy, charging higher transcriptionist work rates should not be a problem. Searching for company positions that pay the transcriptionist wages you require might take some more time, since most of them set their standards relatively high. Do your best to find the company or client that will pay you for what you are worth and your life in transcriptionist work will go smoothly.

Medical Transcription Tools: Three Items You Don’t Want to be Without!

Dreaming about your future is one thing, but preparing for it take some extra care and attention. No one ever thinks that things will be as difficult as they are when they fail to plan. That is why it is important to plan for your future in transcriptionist work. One of the first ways to plan is to think about all of the transcription tools you will need before starting your job. A lot of what you need will be provided by your online training facility, but there is still a lot of work to do on your part.

Given below are three transcription tools you cannot do without when aiming to make it big in transcriptionist work:

1. Equipment – This one may go without saying, but it must be mentioned. You are going to need more than just a computer and a set of headphones before you start your journey. Other transcription tools required include a foot pedal, word expander program, and transcription templates. Your computer should be up-to-date, and if you can afford it, purchase two just in case the other breaks down so you never have to miss any work.

Focus on quality when purchasing your headphones. A poor pair of headphones will actually end up costing you much more over the long haul as you will have to purchase numerous replacements. Your foot pedal should come with your training supplies, however if it does not, you can order one online. A foot pedal helps make transcriptionist work a lot easier by sparing time away from the keyboard, creating more time for making production. Word expander programs can be downloaded, but do come with a small fee. Transcription templates will be another useful tool that will help you to save time and money along with the word expander and foot pedal, and can be conveniently downloaded online for free.

2. Environment – Transcriptionist work at home can actually be a little bit more difficult because there is so much freedom involved. It helps if you can create a stabilized and organized work area free of distractions where you can be productive. You can’t make money if you don’t work, so it may be helpful to organize some type of schedule that you can stick to. It doesn’t necessarily have to include strict time frames, but you do need to set aside an amount of time each day that you plan to work. For example, plan to work at least four hours nonstop each day. If that isn’t possible, break your production time up into two-hour time frames. What’s most important is that you are comfortable and have a work area that is designed specifically for your transcriptionist work.

3. Mental Attitude – Your mental attitude will be one of your greatest transcription tools of all. You must remain positive. Training for your transcriptionist work position can take some time and unfortunately, a lot of people give up because they can’t understand the terms being dictated, and they can’t seem to get the hang of the grammar and punctuation. Don’t allow that to happen to you. Everyone messes up at least a million times before they get to where they want to be. You will not be rich within the first two years of your career, but eventually, you will be making the money that you want. The key is to stay focused and allow yourself to make mistakes and recognize them. Once you know what your weaknesses are, you can effectively work on improving them. It’s an awful lot of blood, sweat, and tears, but it’s worth it!

Medical Transcription Templates: Why They Save You So Much Time

Everyone who is in the transcription business has their own special way of doing things. Some people use extra equipment and helpful supplies, while others choose to do things differently. And some people are not even aware of all of the helpful tools that are available to assist them. Besides foot pedals and word expander programs, transcription templates are another tool that help make the day run a lot smoother.

Transcription jobs revolve around productivity. If you don’t have accuracy and speed, you won’t get very far. Fortunately, technology and transcription advancements have made it easy for anyone to get involved in this career. One of the many inconveniences when it comes to transcription jobs is a report full of the same information, dictated over and over again.

It is important for you to be informed about transcription templates before you enter into your career. If you’re already working, then this information will be very helpful to you. Most reports contain varied important information throughout. However, every now and then, you are going to run into a report that practically repeats information. When these instances occur, the only logical thing to do is to download a transcription template.

You can find most templates online for free, so there is no need to worry about spending any extra cash. Templates are also referred to as “normals” in the medical field. A normal occurs when a patient has undergone a series of tests or examinations that all turned out normal. The order in which the normal, or transcription template is dictated is usually the same for all “normal” reports. It sounds quite confusing, but it is actually one of the best ways to enhance your production in the transcription industry.

On a really good day, you’ll have a series of normals. You may end up typing 10 reports without having to transcribe no more than a couple of lines. The only thing you have to do is download the transcription templates and enter them into your word expander program. There are a variety of templates to choose from, but for your convenience, it’s best to just go ahead and download as many as you can to save you from having to do it later when the report is due.

Unfortunately, a lot of transcription jobs do not inform the employee about all of the materials they need in order to increase productivity, nor do transcription training schools. It is up to you as a transcriptionist to make your work experience as enjoyable and as productive as possible. Transcription templates can mean the difference between hundreds of dollars per week, especially if you are receiving a number of normals.
