Medical Transcription Machine: What to Look for When You Need New Equipment
Thinking about going into medical transcriptionist work? Then you need to have the right stuff. Having what you need not only includes a good education from an accredited school, but also the right transcription equipment. When you have everything you need, you will be ready to make a living and everything you have put together will literally be a money-making transcription machine!
A professional transcriber needs more than just a computer. If you did already know, you can work from home as well as in a medical office. It doesn’t take a genius to know that most people choose to go into transcriptionist work from home. Fortunately, everything you need for your career can easily be found at your local office supplies store. The first and most obvious piece of equipment to have in your office is a computer.
Not just any computer will do. You need a trustworthy computer complete with anti-virus software, anti-spyware, and lots of disk space. The last thing you want is to have your computer crash or break down unexpectedly. The end result? Unless you have another reliable computer nearby where you can sit and work, you miss out. Missing too much work is never good no matter what type of career you have. Better to be safe than sorry.
You’ll also need a comfortable desk and chair where you can spend hours per day typing medical reports. The more comfortable the desk and chair, the less headaches and muscle cramps you will have to deal with, which is a very common complaint amongst people who work at a desk all day. Also make sure that you set your home office up in an area where you can focus on your work.
Some of the other things you will need to complete your medical transcription machine include a foot pedal and a shorthand program. A foot pedal is needed to rewind, play, stop, and fast forward the dictation. It’s much easier to use a foot pedal because it takes less time than using your mouse to click the commands. If you do attempt to use your mouse and not use a foot pedal when in transcriptionist work, you’ll find out quickly that it is very time-consuming.
A shorthand program is needed to decrease the amount of words you have to type out. Having this type of program installed on your computer can save you thousands of keystrokes per day, allowing your production pace to pick up dramatically. You may end up typing 100 to 200 more lines per hour, and that can make a huge difference in your paycheck.
Another piece of equipment you cannot forget to add to your transcription machine are a good set of headphones. Make sure that the type of headphones you buy do not hurt your eardrums because you are going to need those. Remember that you are looking for quality, so the cheapest pair of headphones may not necessarily be the best idea.
You can find everything you need and more online and at local stores such as Wal-mart and Staples. It is important to stay updated and talk to people who are in the same career field as you so that you can stay updated about the latest equipment. Surf the boards that talk about transcription and read the posts because you don’t want to miss out. People who are in transcriptionist work constantly post new tips and advice in transcription web forums all over the internet.
The good news about it is that it doesn’t take long to assemble your money-making transcription machine. Once you’ve finished, you’ll ultimately be in the right mindset to start earning a living doing what you love.
